Listed in the video all the rules of autumn care
one In early autumn, move the plants closer to the window
Daylight hours are rapidly decreasing from the very beginning of autumn, so the first thing to take care of is providing indoor plants with enough light. At the beginning of autumn, it is worth reviewing their location in the apartment and rearranging, first of all, those specimens that stand in dark corners and away from windows. Window sills are the best place for the autumn-winter period, and if possible, it is better to put flowers on the east and south sides. But make sure that there is no draft from the windows, otherwise the plants, although they will receive light, will freeze. When passing cold air through the windows, you can place the flowers on the rack and put it closer to the window.
2 Starting in October, keep an eye on the humidity
If everything is in order with humidity before the start of the heating season, especially during the period of prolonged September rains, then soon, with the inclusion of batteries, it changes dramatically. This usually happens in early October, and home plants will immediately feel the changes. A win-win option is a humidifier that will benefit not only flowers. If it is not possible to buy it, then you must strictly adhere to the spraying regimen. Depending on the level of humidity in the apartment, this should be done every few days, every day or in the morning and evening. At the beginning of the heating season, monitor the well-being of plants in different modes and select the optimal frequency.
3 Work out the optimal frequency and amount of watering for autumn
It is also necessary to revise the amount of watering in the fall. It seems that during the cold period, when the apartment is heated, the flow of moisture must be increased. In fact, this is not the case, and not only the dryness of the air affects, but also the amount of light, which in any case will be significantly reduced. Therefore, watering should be slightly reduced and focus on the weather. On sunny days, you can water a little more, and on cloudy rainy weather, the soil may not dry out. It is the non-drying of the soil that is the main danger. It threatens with acidification of the soil and the appearance of mold.
four Transplant in early autumn plants that are in dire need of it
Autumn is the time when you can prepare flowers for a less favorable cold period of several months. Transplanting in the fall is not what experts recommend for houseplants. However, there are a number of reasons why it is still worth doing, and it is better in early autumn than later in winter. These include the appearance of mold (and the inability to remove it), the overgrowth of the pot and the compaction and depletion of the soil.
5 Do your fall pruning
Plants need to be trimmed regularly, and while the best time to do this is in the spring (as most people run out of dormancy), fall can also be a good time to prune flowers. Since in the summer many of them go through a stage of active growth, by the beginning of autumn, too lush and not very beautiful form may appear. This is one of the reasons for pruning, so use a sharp pruner to cut off the shoots, giving the plant the desired shape. Another reason is sanitary. After the summer season, you can find diseased leaves, dry shoots, wilted flowers, which should be removed during the autumn pruning. And, finally, it is worth pruning with species that bloom in autumn and winter, removing dried, unnecessary parts of the plant and thereby refreshing it before flowering. Please note that pruning should not be combined with a transplant! Carefully study the condition of the flower and draw conclusions which of the procedures is required more.
6 From mid-September, gradually reduce the amount of fertilizer
During the transitional season, plants dramatically change their need for additional nutrients and their ability to absorb them efficiently. It will not work to monitor the reaction and well-being of flowers here, since top dressing does not work immediately, but in the long term. Therefore, from mid-September, it is recommended to gradually reduce the amount of fertilizer in order to completely stop feeding by winter. The exception is plants that bloom in autumn. These include, for example, violet, cyclamen, evergreen azalea, gusmania and some others.
7 Accurately choose top dressing for the fall, if necessary
In the course of the gradual reduction of additional substances, it is important to choose the right autumn fertilizer. For example, tropical plant species (ivy, monstera, dieffenbachia, fittonia) in the fall are best fed with a complex fertilizer with microelements. At the same time, ivy and palm trees can also be fertilized with organic matter in a small concentration. Phosphorus-potassium fertilizers (for example, potassium monophosphate) fertilize home plants that prepare for a dormant period in the fall: pelargonium, oleander, myrtle, clerodendrum and some others.
eight Wash plant leaves with soapy water
In autumn and winter, there is a risk of infection with various diseases, such as spider mites. To prevent this in the fall, it is recommended to inspect indoor plants and wash the leaves with soapy water. After treatment, the humidity level must be temporarily reduced (do not turn on the humidifier, do not spray), and repeat the procedure after about a week.
