The first thing a consultant at IKEA (and most likely in another store where the wardrobe is made to order) will ask you about is the parameters of the room. You need to measure the dimensions of the room to find out what size storage system will fit. Do not forget to take into account the free space in front of the cabinet to make a margin for opening the doors.
2 Decide who (what) it will be for
Agree, the task of designing a closet for one person is very different from the need to make a storage system for the whole family. Therefore, it is important to understand immediately for whom the cabinet will be intended. Or to assume the future — for example, if a young family is already expecting or planning to replenish in the near future, this is important to consider.
3 Determine the purpose of the cabinet
And here it is no longer about who and how will use this closet, but about what you plan to store there. Depending on this decision, you will know how much space you need for each type of thing.

Even before you start designing, decide what you will store on hangers and what will lie down. What items can you vacuum bag and put away — this applies to seasonal and large items such as spare blankets or pillows. This is important to leave the right free space in the closet, and everything fits.
It is also important to decide in advance whether you need to allocate space for household appliances: a vacuum cleaner, ironing board, iron or dryer.
5 Define storage types
Shelf dimensions, shelf types, rail heights. At IKEA, for example, there are special systems that are actually easy to use — metal baskets, shelves for storing jewelry, trouser cases, retractable shoe racks, and even hanging iron holders. They really help organize your storage better, so it’s important to decide ahead of time what you need.
For example, bed linen and towels are conveniently stored in metal baskets. And if you don’t have a shoe rack in the hallway, you can use the built-in shoe racks and put 4-5 pairs of casual shoes or sneakers.
6 Select design
Here are some general tips:
- Immediately determining the location of the cabinet, you will understand which doors you need. So, sliding doors save space from the outside of the cabinet, but they are not suitable for narrow storage systems, as they hide the space inside even more. And ordinary hinged doors require a place to open, but inside they save centimeters.
- Plan one shelf at the very top without dividers — it will be convenient to put vacuum bags, hats, long boxes with shoes there. And you won’t need to get to it daily, only a few times a season.

The lighting inside the cabinet is a useful bonus. But it will make the design more expensive.
